Ian Bott

Ian Bott - Mellor Brook Artist

We all know that it sometimes takes a while to achieve ones goals, if indeed we are lucky enough to achieve them at all.  In my case the goal was the opportunity to show my artwork - it has taken 38 years! As a very keen teenage artist I did A' level Art and seriously considered pursuing Art as a career. However, the worlds shortest careers education session, delivered by my austere Headteacher, comprised, Enter, ah Bott, Geography, Leeds. That was it. So, being a compliant sort, I went off to do a Geography degree at Leeds University followed by a 32 year career as a teacher in secondary schools throughout the North West (to be fair some of this involved teaching Art up to GCSE level, something I really enjoyed). Ive always kept my hand in with the occasional acrylic or oil painting based on local scenes or ones brought back from my travels. After a satisfying and successful career I had the chance to retire early in summer 2014 and, at last, I could revisit my teenage goal. I now have a studio set up at home and, weather permitting, like to paint plein air. Happy days! This is a fresh start for me as an Artist and the culmination of the past years work will be shown at my first Exhibition, this October in our village Gallery, the Britannia Gallery, Mellor Brook, Lancashire. Ive waited a long time for this. Clearly, perseverance does work.

The exhibition will consist of over 50 works ranging from various sizes of oil paintings, some water colours and large A1 size acrylics. I aim for variety in my artwork and try to capture the realism of a scene, with many pictures showing a lot of detail. The subject matter features numerous local scenes, particularly of the Ribble Valley and includes recent travels to European destinations such as Barcelona and the Cote dAzure.  As a mature but new’ artist I am always keen to learn so please let me know what you think of the exhibition. I will be in the Gallery on the afternoons of the 15th, 22nd and 29th of October for a chat. I am willing to undertake commissions and very much look forward to meeting you.
